It has been officially 1 Week since I got my new puppy, Ruby

It has officially been a week since monday since I got a new puppy, Ruby. It has been a crazy week with loads of ups and downs. Ruby was kind of a spur of the moment buy. My girlfriend and daughter have been asking me for a dog for years and I always said no because of the space (we live in an apartment) and time it will take to look after a dog.   We had been looking for a pomeranian puppy for a couple of months and where nearly scammed in the process (click here to read story) But on one crazy bank holiday monday I finally gave in and we drove 250 miles to get her.

The first night looking after her was quite simple. We bought a small plastic box to bring her back home in as we didn't have time to buy a proper travel system. After I took out the puppy supplies and crate out of the van we brought her into our apartment. I let her smell around the living room while I put the crate together. Thankfully it folded out very quickly and she was ready for bed. after she christened the rug. I put her to bed and I slept on the sofa, she stayed in her crate and I didn't hear a peep until morning. The first night and the second seemed to go pretty well and Ruby seemed to work out how to use the puppy pads very quickly,

By the third day she became a lot less settled. She started getting up during the night  to pee and lack of sleep combined with an uncomfortable sofa meant I started getting more cranky and I struggled to keep up with her. As she hasn't had her second injections yet she can not touch the ground outside which meant we couldn't take her to the park or do anything fun outside of the apartment. All I thought I had learn't about potty training seemed to go out of the window and she kept on weeing on the floor. I was tired I wasn't paying close attention to her habits and body language and how she acts when she needs to go. She seemed to listen a lot less although we made a little progress with recognizing her name nothing seemed to be going right.

I was confused by so many different techniques

I was getting really frustrated with her I turned to youtube to find videos on how to train a dog properly. I watched loads of videos by people who gave opposing views on dog training. I was confused by so many different techniques and dog trainers who are just on youtube to guide people to their personal website. where I pay a fee for dog training tips. They put out half the information in a video and trying to get people to pay to see the rest. I felt like I wasn't learning anything. Then I found Cesar Millan, Cesar is an Latin American dog trainer on Nat

Geo WIld. His style of calm and assertive training really spoke to me. The way the dogs listened to him was amazing. They respected him and he even referred to himself as the leader of pack.

Your dog mirrors your behaviour, whatever that behaviour is

Where had he been all my life, Why hadn't I found his videos sooner. I initially watched as many of his youtube videos I could. I started by watching dog whisperer then I started watching Cesar to the rescue. I learnt so much from his shows. The main thing I learn't was you, the owner must be the leader of the pack and enforce discipline on your dog. The next rule I learn't was your dog mirrors your behaviour, whatever that behaviour is. If you are calm and take everything in your stride your dog will do the same. This struck a cord with me. I realised that I wasn't being calm and assertive, I was being erratic and overpowering. Correcting every single thing that ruby was doing and not realising that she wasn't really listening to me and definitely not learning anything.

Everything changed once I changed my mental attitude

Everything changed once I changed my mental attitude. I didn't feel so overwhelmed anymore and I realised that I've only had her a week and I needed to remember why I got her in the first place and that was to make my family happy. You wouldn't expect your new born baby to know her 9 times table, so don't expect your dog to know everything straight away either.

Be kind and loving and you will get it back

After a week of ups and downs I have learn't so much. I learn't that how you are with people they will be the same with you. Don't be ruled by emotion because it can affect the people and animals around you. Be kind and loving and you will get it back, be the opposite and dont be surprised if your animals, children and spouse act the same way towards you.
